When I worked at a funeral home, a man came in with only one photograph of his wife as a young, beautiful woman. While gathering photos for the slideshow that would be shown the following day, he took out his wallet and carefully pulled out the picture. It was damaged and folded, clearly well-loved and worn from the years. He told me it had been in his wallet for over twenty years. He was hesitant to leave it behind, but I promised him it would be safe.
What he didn’t know was that I took the photograph home and restored it for him. I printed several new copies in different sizes, all beautifully retouched. When he returned the next day to pick up the slideshow photos, I handed him the original picture along with the new matte and satin prints of his wife. His face lit up with disbelief and joy. He hugged me, thanked me, and even shed a tear. I hadn’t expected such a heartfelt reaction—a simple thank you would have been enough—but that moment reminded me why I love what I do.
